wetness, mud slides and sand flies
Heading South. Seals were ok. Pancake rocks were pretty average. But hey! There are heaps of sand flies, torrential rain and yes, the odd land slide across the road or 4.
We stopped 13km north of franz joseph glacia.it was a fairly nice camp site near a lake and with heaps of sand flies. Still the great toilets were only a 200m walk away.
So. The next day we were headed for a camp site near haast pass where I was to do a walk.
Then we came across a small issue.
We crossed thos once the water subsided only to find a land slide across the road. Due to the lack of folks looking back at is from the other side, we figured that this one was the least of the issues.
We set up camp a few kilometers back where wr got in early. Soon people started piling in if for no other reason than the good toilets.
This was perhaps outlr cosiest camp but it was infested with sand flies.
That evening I decided to do a hike / run. I forgot to take a camera but it was wet, muddy, slippery and involved a swing bridge over a raging torrent. The sign said 2 hours each way. With 7 mins of driving each way it was only 90mins camp to camp.
By the next morning all of the slips had been cleared away and we finally made it through haast pass and away from bity things.
We are now in Wanaka and in an expensive camp site. There was a small confrontation when we stole (litterally carried 50m) a table from another camp site. All was resolved but I did get one photo of them on their way back from showering.
Ahh. Europeans. They're a simple people.
It is an expensive site but the facilities are good.
Whoa! Well, that’s different. Earthquakes. Land slips. Stay away from volcanoes!
ReplyDeleteAhhh....good toilets at a campsite is luxury. To be enjoyed to their full capacity (so to speak). And hey, you have to claim picnic tables by leaves ng something on it. Campers code! You were well within your rights to abscond with it.
Great action shots of Olivia’s beam work over the pool and Of Dad’s trampolinism.
Hope the extreme conditions have calmed a little and Wanaka has been fun.
Each day sounds and looks like it is more and more fun. All looks very exciting. Jock is having a good time and enjoying himself.
DeleteIt is now 10 degrees and we are about to get on the shotover jet boat. Then up to the remarkables where it has just snowed. A change for the better I'd say.
